We are so pleased and proud to announce that we have reached our 2010 goal of 10,000 children entered into the British Home Children Descendants Database!
We are so grateful to member Georgina Sales for her vigilance and devotion to this project. George has entered over 6500 BHC herself. We are also so thankful to the many others who have contributed their BHC's information, photographs and details.
Here's to the next 10,000. If you have not yet entered your BHC's information, we invite you to join us in this ongoing FREE project by inputting your ancestor or BHC interest today. |

Thousands of former British child migrants sent to Australia before 1970 are now eligible for UK funding towards the cost of reuniting with their families.
The funding covers the practical costs of travel and is available to any child migrant sent under school-leaving age from Great Britain and Northern Ireland to countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Zimbabwe, then called Rhodesia.
The $10 million Family Restoration Fund was launched in the UK on Monday night.
Britain's High Commissioner to Australia, Valerie Amos, said the decision followed many years of struggle by former child migrants for recognition and acknowledgement.
"The fund has particular relevance in Australia, which is home to up to 10,000 former child migrants," she said in a statement.
Baroness Amos said she had the honour of meeting many of the migrants whose lives were blighted, and heard their personal stories.
"The fund, coming off the back of the (Forgotten Australians) apology and commemorative receptions, is another important milestone in recognising past injustices."
The UK child migrant program operated from the late 1800s through to 1970 with some 130,000 mostly poor or orphaned children aged 7-14 sent to Commonwealth countries overseas.
They were promised a better life but the reality was too often harsh institutional life, hard labour and physical and sexual abuse.
In February former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown issued an official apology for this shameful child resettlement program and announced a compensation fund.

Information from our Administrator:
We are currently testing out a new Chatroom which can be accessed through the Member Menus when you log into the site (left hand set of menus). When you click the BHC Chat link, you'll be taken to a new page, and you will have to RE-login to the Chatroom, but that's for your safety so, though I know it's inconvenient, it's better security. There are TONS of bells and whistles, and you can change everything--even the background if you like--but please for those of our members who are a bit computer-phobic, remember you canNOT break this! Just feel free to play with it--there are 3 new chatrooms and hopefully this will be a good chance for BHC descendants and researchers to meet up with each other and just get to know everyone. Eventually we are hoping to use the chatroom for Live Meetings with experts and speakers, but that depends on how you all like the system. There is NOT a FAQ or help yet for the chatroom, but it's being worked on, so if you have questions, write our Help & Support and they'll be happy to help you. Also in our Member Menu is something I've wanted to add for a long time--there is a new Sending Agency Database, which, eventually will contain the name, history and current address for records (if one exists) of all the sending agencies. At this moment, we have only about 20 agencies listed, but that, like our BHC database, is a collaborative effort, so feel free to add a Sending Agency if you don't see the one your BHC was associated with--the basic instructions are within the database. Like with the Chatroom, the FAQ is currently being worked up, so bear with us until that's up in the Help section. |
